While leaving behind all celebrations after 2023, we have compiled 12 hotly-anticipated buildings we look forward to opening in 2024.
Mestres Wåge Arquitectes, Mendoza Partida, BAX Studio's Kunstsilo - a transformation of a grain silo on Odderøya in Kristiansand into an art museum in Norway, OMA's Simone-Veil Bridge - spanning the two banks of the Garonne River to provide a new public space in Bordeaux, MAD's Fenix Museum of Migration - the firm's first cultural project in Europe, OPEN Architecture's half-sliced Sun Tower in China make our list for the most anticipated buildings of 2024.

China Philharmonic Concert Hall in Beijing, China by MAD (to be opened in 2024)
Designed by MAD Architects, China Philharmonic Concert Hall is scheduled to open in 2024 in Beijing. Currently under construction, the 26,000-square-metre building is made of a fluid and translucent façade resembling the reminiscent of "a piece of jade".
"The concert hall is one of the most significant cultural projects in the nation’s capital. It will become the first permanent residence for the China Philharmonic Orchestra, which gave rise to a new generation of symphonies in China,” MAD explained.

Fenix Museum of Migration in Rotterdam by MAD (to be opened in 2024)
The Fenix Museum of Migration, designed by MAD Architects, is the transformation of a warehouse, built in 1923, into a new cultural project in Rotterdam. The Fenix Museum of Migration is scheduled to open to the public in 2024.
Commissioned by the Droom en Daad Foundation, once complete, the Fenix Museum of Migration will the first cultural project of MAD in Europe. MAD envisioned two spiral staircases that extend from the ground and form an observation deck at the top. The staircases move through the space with different rhythms, they break down the massive scale of the original warehouse, adding more human-scale and intimate spaces.

Sun Tower in China by OPEN Architecture (to be opened in 2024)
OPEN Architecture designed the curvilinear Sun Tower, creating a half-sliced silhouette and porous structure and opening up itself towards the coast. The 50-metre high structure is set to become a new landmark on the coast of Yantai, a booming city on the coast of the Yellow Sea, China.
The Sun Tower, currently under construction at site, is scheduled for completion in 2024. The Sun Tower consists of a semi-outdoor theatre on the ground, a winding exhibition space, and a library in the sky.

Museo Egizio 2024 in Turin, Italy by OMA (to be opened in 2024)
Designed by OMA Managing Partner David Gianotten and architect Andreas Karavanas, earlier in 2023, the firm won a competition to transform Museo Egizio, the world’s oldest museum for Ancient Egyptian culture, into an open cultural space accessible to all in Turin, Italy.
Museo Egizio 2024 is scheduled to open to the public in the new year to celebate the Museum’s 200th anniversary in 2024. OMA's new design consists of a new covered courtyard known as Piazza Egizia and comprises a series of connected urban rooms within the existing museum. The design features six distinctive urban rooms, with each has its unique scale, function, and quality. The Piazza Egizia, the largest urban room, takes place at the center of the museum, acting as a central spine.

Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates by Foster + Partners (to be opened in 2024)
British architecture firm Foster + Partners designed a museum that can be a tribute to Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and love of nature, the museum is nestled in a landscape garden. Envisioned as a monument and memorial, the 44,000-square-metre museum will be dedicated to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE.
Although the museum's opening date has been postponed for years due to construction delays and some uncertainty about the museum's operational strategies, the museum is planned to open in 2024, according to Foster + Partners' website. Located on the Saadiyat Island Cultural District, the museum's galleries are arranged within a mound, in which its form evokes an abstraction of the topography of the Emirates. Moreover, the five lightweight steel structures placed above the mound are "sculpted aerodynamically to act as solar thermal towers."

Beijing City Library in Beijing, China by Snøhetta (to be opened in 2024)
Norwegian firm Snøhetta has created a spacious canopy that evokes a ginkgo forest - a ginkgo tree is known "one of the oldest living tree species in the world." Added as a significant feature to the design, the canopy is supported by a 16-metre-height glass façade and tree-like columns inside.
The new Beijing City Library is scheduled to open to the public in early 2024, according to Snøhetta's website. The design aims to set new standards for sustainable library design, challenging to traditional library typologies. Under the large canopy, visitors will meet with topographic-like large terraced reading platforms, which are entirely visible from outside. These platforms also promote distribution and access to knowledge.

Sun Rock in Changhua County, Taiwan by MVRDV (to be opened in 2024)
MVRDV has designed a dome-shaped and solar-clad tower that focuses on generating solar energy as efficiently as possible. Named Sun Rock, the 12,900-square-metre building will serve as an operations facility containing offices, a maintenance workshop, storage spaces, and a public gallery for Taiwan’s government-owned power company Taipower.
Sun Rock is scheduled to open to the public in the end of 2024, according to Taipower's website. The entire façade is clad in photovoltaics, maximising the energy gains to make it not only self-sustainable, but also allowing the building to become a tool of energy production, exporting electricity to the rest of the grid." According to MVRDV, the building will be "a manifesto for Taipower’s carbon-free future".

teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates by teamLab (to be opened in 2024)
Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will soon embrace a new multi-sensory building, named teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, designed by interdisciplinary Tokyo-based art collective teamLab.
The 17,000-square-metre building will be a home to a multi-sensory art experience featuring original and constantly transforming artistic installations unique to Abu Dhabi. The design is distinctive with its smooth surfaces and flowing lines that cascade down to the public space. teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi is planned to open to the public in 2024.

Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza, Egypt by Heneghan Peng Architects
The long-waited Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza is one of hotly-anticipated projects internationally. Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the project is situated at the edge of the first desert plateau between the pyramids and Cairo.
Creating a three dimensional structure, the layout of the museum is derived from "a set of visual axes from the site to the three pyramids defines the framework within which the museum emerges, from the overall scale of the site to the smallest of details." The 100,000-square-metre museum is being built by using nearly 500,000 square meters translucent stone in a desert plateau.
Estimated opening for the Grand Egyptian Museum is Late-Spring 2024, according to the museum's website.

Hampi Art Labs, India by sP+A (to be opened in February 2024)
India's new arts centre, Hampi Art Labs, will open to the public in February 2024 with Right Foot First exhibition and an inaugural residency cycle. Designed by Mumbai-based architect and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of CEPT University in Ahmedabad, Sameep Padora and his studio sP+a, the new centre will offer artists unique production facilities, an environment to creatively retreat in and galleries for world-class display.
Located near the last capital of the last great Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagar and UNESCO World Heritage Site Hampi, the design is envisioned as a flowing and organic form, paying tribute to its natural surrounding. The building is made up of locally sourced materials such as soil, stone and steel.

Kunstsilo, Kristiansand, Norway by Mestres Wåge Arquitectes, Mendoza Partida, BAX Studio (to be opened on May 11, 2024)
Designed by Mestres Wåge Arquitectes, Mendoza Partida and BAX Studio, the new Kunstsilo is the transformation of a grain silo into an art museum in Kristiansand, Norway. The team won an architectural competition in 2016 to convert the silo building, built in 1935, into a future art museum.
Creating an elegant balance by combining respect for the qualities of the existing silo building, the building will demonstrate the expressive power of a silo with the sculptural and spatial experiences it offers. The building consists of a new museum, a performing arts school, a hotel and a building to be used as an incubator for artistic start-ups.
The new Kunstsilo is planned to open to the public on May 11th, 2024.

Simone-Veil Bridge, Bordeaux, France by OMA (to be opened in June 2024)
OMA’s Simone-Veil Bridge, located in Bordeaux, is one of the firm’s hotly-anticipated project in France. Once complete, the 549-meter Simone-Veil Bridge will span the two banks of the Garonne River and provide a new public space in the city. The bridge will connect the municipalities Floirac to Bègles and Bordeaux.
The Simone-Veil Bridge is scheduled to open to the public in June 2024, according to The Local website.
Led by OMA Partner Chris van Duijn and project architect Gilles Guyot, the bridge will be a continuous surface extending beyond the banks of the river to the landscaped public spaces on each side. With a 44-meter width, the bridge accommodates individual lanes for private cars, public transport, bicycles, and foot traffic, and includes the largest lane dedicated to pedestrians. The bridge can be closed off at any time to serve for temporary public events such as festivals and markets.
