Hotel Romeo Roma, Italy, by Zaha Hadid Architects

The 16th-century old Roman Palazzo in Italy has been restored and renovated into the Hotel Romeo Roma by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA). Zaha Hadid's architectural style is referenced in the hotel's new interiors, which are inspired by Rome's multi-layered past.

ZHA was already forced to design this concept due to the uneven geometries of the palazzo; for instance, one vault may overlap another at an angle, resulting in moments of surprise and unanticipated effects. Like her Baroque ancestors who constructed heavens in the towers of their buildings, Hadid had a history of bending form to enchant architecture. However, functional purpose and dimensional constraints were not the only factors that influenced design. ZHA created a fitting bellezza for each room in a country that values beauty.

Niko Neko 5.0 Cafe, Kuala Lumpur, by Spacemen Studio

The elaborate matcha preparation technique in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, served as the inspiration for the interior design of a cafe designed by Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur-based architecture firm Spacemen Studio. The 50-square-meter area, known as Niko Neko 5.0, features a striking ceiling installation of hand-dyed fabric.

These flowing layers glide regularly overhead, capturing the exquisite swirl of whisked matcha and the smooth elegance of silk floating in the air. The fabric is painted in a variety of greens by artist Duniamotif, ranging from vibrant matcha tones to rich forest hues, with subtle gradients that shift like the shimmering light of an aurora.
