'Mai Mai' is a very special home in Auckland designed by Pattersons, which creates a 'mobile home' effect with its unique facade appearance. The residential building was designed for a couple living in Auckland and it reconciles two individual personalities, hunter and bird and creates a singular sense of place. For this home, a feathery motif referencing traditional Maori feather cloaks is used on the exterior white fibreglass walls. Inside, a small footprint incorporates many spatial experiences, including wide city views, a leather lined den and an interior courtyard.
According to the designers of Pattersons, Mai Mai is a term for the shelter used for hunting or bird watching. In this Mai Mai the glass surrounded sitting room sits like a private perch from which to enjoy viewing the city. Mai Mai presents a full city view with transparency to the backyard. At the entrance level, two garage parking area are separated from other living spaces. The colourful and undulating facade of the home creates a holistic approach in design, which minimizes the appearance of dwelling while the interior revealing maximum sizes for private spaces.
