.As a local Alice Springs Architect who has been living and working in the Central Australian desert for over 30 years, I have developed an in-depth and practical understanding of the design principles for environmentally and culturally responsive architecture in remote and regional localities. For many years, I have worked with the remote Aboriginal communities of Central Australia and also built extensively within the urban setting of Alice Springs.Projects delivered consist of housing, retail, tourism, education and health related buildings and involved research and development into practical building technologies for use in remote area construction. I have worked extensively with implementing energy saving alternatives to achieve comfort level conditions whilst balancing the long term operating costs, clients budgets and functional boundaries. Efficiency in project delivery is backed up by long term, hands on experience in the facilitation of client contracts and a consistent teamwork approach on site. I have contributed as an active member of the Institute of Architects and the Northern Territory Building Practitioners Board for many years and was a founding member of the Desert Knowledge Consortium which assisted in the establishment of Desert Knowledge Australia and the Desert Peoples Centre. I have travelled to other desert regions of the world such as Yemen, Morocco, Egypt and southern USA studying traditional architecture and its place within our built environment. Throughout the1980s and 90s, I was instrumental in the reuse of earth construction in the central desert region through empowerment programs that encouraged self help building and localised industry creation opportunities.Over time built environments that our office has played key roles in delivering have received awards in the Northern Territory, nationally and internationally for their ability to respond to people and place, and demonstrate ecologically responsible architecture.
