Hadid, Levete and Mather shortlisted for galleries schemes
Zaha Hadid, Amanda Levete and Haworth Tompkins are among 13 architects who have been shortlisted to design new galleries for the Science Museum at its South Kensington base.
The three permanent galleries will all open by 2018 with two – an interactive gallery and one about maths – due to open in 2016. The new medicine galleries will open two years later.
Hadid has been shortlisted for the maths gallery along with five others including Hugh Broughton and Carmody Groarke.
The new gallery will tell the stories of mathematicians, their tools and ideas and the wider world that their work has underpinned, from the turn of the 17th century to the present day.
And seven practices have been shortlisted for the medicines galleries including Rick Mather and Wilkinson Eyre. These will double the size of the museum’s current galleries and will tell the story of how medicine has transformed lives over the past 400 years.
Winners for both schemes will be announced at the beginning of August.
The galleries are being delivered as part of the Science Museum’s masterplan, which will transform around a third of the London museum over the next five years.
