Coming year in architecture figures to be filled with drama

Northerly Island-Alex Garcia, Chicago Tribune-Hills and water features have been created on formerly flat Northerly Island, shown from the south in July 2014. The peninsula's pastoral southern half is scheduled to open to the public in June.
It looks like 2015 will be another drama-filled year in architecture. Several important buildings and public spaces, as well as the much-anticipated Chicago Architecture Biennial, are poised to make their debuts.

Virgin Hotel: This delayed project, Virgin's first hotel in the U.S., finally will open Jan. 15. It's a revamp of the Old Dearborn Bank Building at 203 N. Wabash Ave., an understated 1920s office building designed by the princes of exuberant, movie-palace architecture, Rapp & Rapp.
