San Francisco Loves to Hate the Design of Its Newest Tower

Snøhetta's designs for One Van Ness have already inspired a number of photoshopped parodies.

Right at the turn of the year, Bay Area residents got a new look at a towerplanned near the heart of San Francisco. One Van Ness has been in the works for a while; a prior design for this mid-rise building by Richard Meier & Partners, the firm that designed the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, fell to the wayside when the ownership of the development changed hands. Is that good news or bad?

The new design for One Van Ness, which will rise 37 stories at the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and Market Street, is the work of Snøhetta, the firm that designed the expansion to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (currently under construction). Snøhetta's chief, Craig Dykers, has become something of a darling in San Francisco, where his firm recently opened an office.
