Leading architects join the line up for this year’s 10x10 charity auction of art inspired by London

Each year, 10x10 invites architects, designers and artists to capture parts of London in their own unique style.

Part of the city is divided into a 10 by 10 grid, with each space allocated to a different creator resulting in 100 pieces that are then exhibited and auctioned off to raise money for Article 25.

For 2013 the focus is on east London and a number of leading British architects have joined the roster of contributors.

If any take your fancy you can bid on them online via the 10x10 website.

Hoxton Triptych by Alison Brooks - ‘This tripartite piece presents a very traditional form of architectural representation, the hand sketch, as a counterpoint two digitally manipulated photographs taken on the same visit to the Geffrye Museum garden square, Hoxton. The images explore the nature of signs and symbols found in east London’s historic architecture and in the context of contemporary urban life.’

Spitalfields by Robert Adam - ‘In historic London the grand and the mundane sit together with a particular informality that wouldn’t come from deliberate planning. Here in Spitalfields you catch a glimpse of this unique character of the City. At the end of Wilkes Street, framed by weaver’s houses and workshops, Nicholas Hawksmoor’s huge Christ Church looms over its surroundings and its spire floats above the roofline. None of this was planned, there is no grandeur here, and the closeness of the place gives it intimacy in spite of the grandeur of the church. This is a lesson for us all.’

The Thinking Eye by David Adjaye - ‘Liverpool Street Station is a transport nexus and this image captures the idea of moving through a place rather than dwelling within it. The use of digital photography was therefore deliberate. The image is a ‘snap’ taken on a phone - superseding the way a sketchbook may have been traditionally used. It is documentation, learning – the thinking eye. With the advent and shrinking of digital technology into a pocket-sized phenomenon, there is the opportunity for fluidity about the things that we look at. It is an experiential recording in the mind and an immediate reflection on that.’

Turville Street by Sarah Wigglesworth - ‘I’m looking south down Turville Street towards the new developments around the north end of Brick Lane/Bethnal Green Road. There is every era of building represented, from 19C townhouses, Peabody to the left, Arts&Crafts to the right and the new skyscraper on Sclater Street looming up in the distance. This is an area in transition: still quite grungy but gentrifying at a furious pace. This is a great moment to catch the city as it changes. The graffiti on the corner shop caught my eye, and I wanted to represent how colourful it was.’

The view from 152 by Alex Ely - ‘I was hunting for a place that offered calmness in the context of the frenetic city. As Moorgate experiences the construction pains of Cross rail, and office buildings in this area get demolished and replaced as fashions change, the Barbican to the west offers a reassuring sense of permanence. The weight and mass of the buildings contrast with the softness of the landscaped garden, fountains and ponds. The guiding hand of the architect is visible in the control and order of the buildings and spaces they frame. The view reminds me of the power of good architecture.’

Broadgate by Ken Shuttleworth - ‘Heads down. Umbrellas up. Londoners dash around Broadgate on a typical day in the city while behind them construction of a new 13-storey groundscraper - 5 Broadgate - is underway. One of the biggest projects being built in London at the moment, 5 Broadgate will become the new headquarters for financial services firm UBS. It will also provide new public space and improved connectivity for Londoners to navigate around the area. This sketch captures the continual movement, change and growth that London embodies.’

Special Square, Goswell Road, by Zaha Hadid - ‘This piece represents the intersection of the many events happening on Goswell Road in recent years. Not only has the area, Clerkenwell, been home to the creative industry but it has developed to become a centre in the Design world.ZHD has played its part, officially opening its showroom last Spring. This piece for 10x10 mimics this development by expressing a spatial explosion from, blurring lines between private and public. The source of the explosion occurs from the installation linked to many ZHD events and exhibitions over the past year. The extended lines express the unfolding of the building facade, inviting vistorscurity and inhabiting the public space beyond.’
