Hadid, SOM and Simpson vie for Swedish super-tall

Zaha Hadid, Ian Simpson Architects and the London-office of SOM have been named on a five-strong shortlist in the competition to design ‘one of the tallest’ building in Scandinavia

The trio of Brits are vying for the 200m-tall, mixed-use tower in Gothenberg, Sweden against fellow finalists Manuelle Gautrand Architects of France and local practice Wingårdhs Arkitektkontor.

More than 50 practices from around the globe entered the contest for project next to the Lindholmen Science Park close to the waterfront.

According to the brief skyscraper will become a landmark for the ‘old port and shipyard’ and an exciting part of the wider Karlvagnsplatsen project.

The 60-storey skyscraper is being billed an ‘integral part’ of the wider precinct calling for a tower that must be ‘feasible in a rational manner and with cost awareness’.

The teams will submit their designs in May with a decision expected in June.
