Mexico city-based architecture firm Pedro & Juana's jungle-themed installation has been opened at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City. Called Hórama Rama, the team's installation was named as the winning design of the MoMA PS1's 2019 Young Architects Program (YAP) and The Museum of Modern Art in March.
The circular installation is now open to the public in time for summer activities. Hórama Rama can be visited until Monday, September 2, 2019. Celebrating its 20th edition this year, each year, an emerging architect or team is selected to design and realize a temporary outdoor structure in the MoMA PS1 courtyard that provides shade, seating, and water.

This year, Pedro & Juana designed a drum-shaped installation and immersive junglespace, with a flowing waterfall, set within a 40-foot-high (12-meter), 90-foot-wide (27,43-meter) cyclorama, taking references from the circular, panoramic structures designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to provide a 360-degree viewing experience.

Using handwoven features and imagery from Mérida, Yucatan, the architects hope to create a new environment of cultural exchange.
"Things are constantly happening in the world and we are totally interconnected and we wanted to play with that idea…that’s why we brought the jungle into Queens," said the team.

In this video below, Ruiz Galindo and Reuss share their vision for how the structure will function throughout MoMA PS1’s Warm Up summer music festival, and how it alters the changing horizon of the neighborhood.
The structure will offer a collection of nature or waterfalls scenes where can visitors may escape or feeling that space in a moment whether they are in a hammock or sitting in front of a waterfall or in outdoor furnitures.

The installation will be a place of a manifold of views. The structure is raised over the courtyard walls and its facade is wrapped by 3D lumber "bristles" that will be used after the installation is removed from the courtyard.

"Finding inspiration in historical panoramas, Pedro & Juana have designed a structure that will allow visitors to immerse themselves in a fantastical wilderness, a visual refuge from the city," said MoMA PS1 Chief Curator Peter Eleey in a statement.
"By juxtaposing two landscapes in transition—the jungle and the Long Island City skyline—they draw attention to the evolving conditions of our environment, both globally and locally, at a crucial moment."

The Young Architects Program at The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 has offered emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design and present innovative projects, challenging each year’s winners to develop creative designs for a temporary, outdoor installation that provides shade, seating, and water. The architects must also work within guidelines that address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling.
