Mexico city-based architecture firm Pedro & Juana has been named as the winner of the MoMA PS1's 2019 Young Architects Program (YAP) and The Museum of Modern Art. 

Named Hórama Rama, the drum-shaped installation designed by Ana Paula Ruiz Galindo and Mecky Reuss of Pedro & Juana will be set at the MoMA PS1's courtyard for the museum’s Warm Up summer concert series starting from June to September later this year.

This year, the firm has beaten other finalists in the competition, including Low Design Office (DK Osseo-Asare and Ryan Bollom), Matter Design (Brandon Clifford, Johanna Lobdell, and Wes McGee), Oana Stănescu and Akane Moriyama, and TO (Jose G Amozurrutia and Carlos Facio).

Celebrating its 20th edition, the Young Architects Program at The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 has offered emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design and present innovative projects, challenging each year’s winners to develop creative designs for a temporary, outdoor installation that provides shade, seating, and water. The architects must also work within guidelines that address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling.

Known with their experimental projects, Pedro&Juana designed a jungle-themed installation forming a drum shape and immersive junglespace in it. Reaching nearly 40-foot-tall, the 90-wide-foot structure is described as a "world-within-a-world…" by Sean Anderson, associate curator in MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design.

The structure will offer a collection of nature or waterfalls scenes where can visitors may escape or feeling that space in a moment whether they are in a hammock or sitting in front of a waterfall or in outdoor furnitures. The installation will be a place of a manifold of views. The structure is raised over the courtyard walls and its facade is wrapped by 3D lumber "bristles" that will be used after the installation is removed from the courtyard.

"The project is jungle themed, so we couldn’t resist adding a waterfall," said Ruiz Galindo. 

"Finding inspiration in historical panoramas, Pedro&Juana have designed a structure that will allow visitors to immerse themselves in a fantastical wilderness, a visual refuge from the city. By juxtaposing two landscapes in transition—the jungle and the Long Island City skyline—they draw attention to the evolving conditions of our environment, both globally and locally, at a crucial moment," said MoMA PS1 Chief Curator Peter Eleey.

The exhibition at MoMA PS1 is organized by Sean Anderson, Associate Curator, with Arièle Dionne-Krosnick, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art.
