Woodsy Architecture Awards Announced

Timber framing is a mainstay of ski country architecture, so it should come as no surprise that industry group WoodWorks' 2015 Wood Design Awards just featured 3 projects in locales familiar to skiers and riders. There are no mega-mansions on this list, though, because the awards focus on nonresidential construction. In fact, many snow sports enthusiasts have probably experienced first-hand the most prominent ski country project to receive an award this year: the Jackson Hole Airport in Jackson, Wyo.

The University of Utah's Integrated Technology in Architecture Center received a Regional Excellence award for Project: ARCHITECTURE, which came out of a partnership with the Girls Scouts of Utah. The three cabins were built near Provo, Utah, using a new material called Interlocking Cross Laminated Timber (ICLT), which can be produced from beetle kill pine wood that would otherwise be turned into heating fuel.

Down the road from Bromley Mountain ski area in southern Vermont sits the Burr Burton Academy Mountain Campus, which also won a Regional Excellence award this year for the classroom addition that blends natural tree forms into the design that produces more energy (through solar panels and energy efficient technologies) than it consumes......Continue Reading
