Star:the superyacht to outshine all others

Unlike anything currently on the water, Igor Lobanov's proposed Star could redefine the superyacht silhouette

Superyachts could look drastically different in the years to come if construction of the proposed Star yacht gets the go-ahead. Conceived by yacht designer Igor Lobanov in collaboration with the engineering and design company BMT and Alex Malybaev of the Moscow-based branding agency Firma, the yacht is intended as a rebuttal to conformist yacht design, which the duo claim has remained conservative and stagnant in comparison to the increasingly futuristic designs mooted for high-end automobiles and other luxury products.

Star would measure 132 metres in length and 60 metres in height, and would feature an abundance of impressive features, including a helipad – now almost de rigueur on the largest superyachts –  interiors measuring some 37,000sq ft, and an underwater viewing deck on the base of the ship that is connected by lift to an eighth-deck viewing platform.

Its proportionate lack of unshaded outdoor areas has attracted some criticism, but Star’s unique appearance has garnered widespread attention. Speaking about the inspiration behind the vessel, BMT yacht design director James Roy has said that technological advances have made the development of increasingly unconventional yacht designs a possibility: ““Star is a tangible view of a 21-century interpretation of art and science. We are fortunate to live in an era where technology makes the delivery of bolder designs more possible – for clients who are adventurous innovators anything is truly possible”.
