The 2014 edition of the international Velux Award has been organised for the 6th time. 2,794 teams representing 86 different countries registered for the 2014 IVA. The international Union of Architects is a partner of the Award since its creation ten years ago.

The celebration of the 10th anniversary of the IVA, together with the award ceremony took place in Vienna, Austria on October 30 in presence of UIA Secretary General Thomas Vonier and Magda Mostafa, jury member and UIA representative.Three prize winners and nine mentions were awarded to the VELUX Award 2014 on the theme “Light of tomorrow”.

A team of four students: Dikang Du, Le Li, Yujing Zhou, Yao Ma, from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, takes first prize with their project “Light, Revitalization”. “To us, said Dikang Du, the light of tomorrow means an emphasis on the more spiritual beauty of life.We did not only discuss better usage of light in the future. We searched for a new definition of light.”

According to American architect and jury chairman Craig Dykers: “The first prize winning project ties to cultural conditions regarding the cycles of the sun foretold in the cultural heritage of the region. There are several narratives at work, and the possibility to heal the urban condition through light.”

The jury characterizes the 2nd prize by Jaebong Jeon, Keunyoung Lim from Hanyang University and Hongik University in Seoul, Korea as fantastic, tying aspects of science fiction with the real world in a very mature approach, animating a demilitarized zone as an artificial cloud. The project “Morning Glory Cloud” is created, as an inspiration to think about the possibility of the Korean boundary’s disappearance.

The third prize winning project “Light of Hope” by Snezhina Aleksieva, Zhenya Yancheva, Tsvetomira Ivanova, Pavel Tsochev from University of Architecture, Construction and Geodesy, Sofia, Bulgaria, aims to bring glows of hope and lighting to the millions of people living in refugee camps around the world. The jury found the project both cost effective, practically feasible and with a human quality expressing a sincere social engagement.
