One Person Gestures: Presenting, Discussing, and Reworking MIT Prototypes of Gustav Metzger’s Dome(s) on Extinction

The One-Person Gestures Workshop actively involves the community in one of legendary artist Gustav Metzger’s recent proposals regarding the construction and long-term activation of spaces for social change. The project specifically concerns the design of a temporary dome planned forFundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, an art museum in Mexico City, intended to address the theme of extinction and provide a venue for engaging and educating the public about existential risks related to the environment, climate change, biodiversity, consciousness, art, science, technology, food, and the future, among others.

Participants will divide into five topically-based groups, lead by moderators, that will discuss different aspects of making the project a reality, building on the work of a class that has been exploring the topic over the course of the fall semester. Discussions will include the materials that could be used for the structure, what will be inside, activities to take place there, and how to garner the interest of the community around and beyond the dome.

The aim of the workshop is to develop a variety of ideas that take into consideration participants’ expertise as well as environmental considerations, communication strategies, and social inequalities.

Before the workshops begin, Gustav Metzger will send a short message via skype to all the participants, briefly explaining his interest behind the project and this gathering, linking it back to his ongoing interest in the possibilities of technologies and their association with repression or consumption, redefined by artistic practice.

Please complete the short application below by November 20th if you would like to participate in the workshop. Your participation will be confirmed by December 2nd. If you have questions, please email Ilse Damkoehler, Public Programming and Communications Assistant, at[email protected].
