Vietnam-based architecture firm Landmark Architecture has renovated Vietnam's old brick residential unit with white and porous materials that remodulate the skin of the building in its own historical context. Titled as 'Coccon House', the residential unit is located in a row house in the expensive new urban area of Vietnam, but now this area is neglected after the economic crisis in Vietnam. After the economic conditions, the design team led by Ta Tien Vinh and Truong Tuan Chung utterly designed a new white-porous skin like a lacework, is being reborn with a new form - presents full of energy, romantic, peaceful with an awareness of security.
Since the old house's structure is clustered and complicated, the design studio only adds one floor and one mezzanine. The advantage of the place is the space at the front and the back of the house, with more nature approaching like garden. The architects only added a kitchen block at the back with the roof as the terrace for the master bedroom on the 2nd floor.
The old balconies at both end of the house are skinned with ventilation brick block, inside this skin is the green space for rain, wind and sunlight to shine through. This in a way can be seen as a 'cocoon', where the users still have access to nature but also appreciated the security factor.
