The international community of the WAF will meet up in Berlin to share ideas+celebrate Architecture

This year's World Architecture Festival is bigger and better than ever before. WAF has selected a few highlights from each day to help plan your visit, including inspirational talks and finalist presentations, exciting parties and social events, architectural tours of Berlin and details of the many events taking place across the Festival Hall!

The annual World Architecture Festival (WAF) is taking place this year at the Berlin Arena, between 16-18 November, and World Architecture Community is an official media partner for the event. This year’s seminar theme is “Housing for everyone”.

On the stage, WAF will host architects from every continent, presenting a housing project that addresses a specific concern and creates new possibilities from different regions. There will be assessments of how the cities around the world have approached housing historically and how the great architectural experiments of the 20th century have fared.

Matthias Sauerbruch, Principal, Sauerbruch Hutton in “From House to housing” on 16th November will talk about  the evolution of today’s mass housing model. How this model can be traced back from terrace houses, 5% philanthropy, “rent slabs” and Karl Marx Alee Soviet housing models. What are the lessons that can be learnt that might inform today’s approach to social housing?

“Housing, energy and construction” seminar on 17th from Silja Tillner and James Pickard will be focused on how to pitch, procure, and build housing with 0% or even negative energy use. How you can demonstrate that the development of cost-effective designs of components, construction systems and processes can add value for both occupier and client, through building performance evaluation, intelligence and data.
