The competition’s program foresees the planning and design of the residential section in Cala Coticcio, ten hectares of Mediterranean costal vegetation located a short distance from La Maddalena’s town center. The program calls for the preliminary project development of fifty, energy-conscious public housing complexes within this costal area. The site is presented as a natural, sea-facing amphitheatre, a harmonious landscape disrupted by the intrusive aesthetic of the preexisting public housing buildings. The new homes, organized in three, small villages surrounded by lush vegetation. With proportions adapted and inspired precisely by this landscape, the new constructions remedy the intrusive insertion of preexisting buildings. The uniformity of this new urban conglomeration is guaranteed by the implementation of constituent elements and materials characteristic of the area’s architecture, revisited through the application of modern constructive solutions in order to provide energy efficient, comfortable living.
