The competition, open by invitation by a private commissioner, foresees the renovation and new function of a farmstead located near Triuggio, in the countryside outside Milan. The volumes of the various buildings, at one time used as service stations and barns, are characteristic of the traditional rustic architecture of the area as is its large courtyard which extends from the master house. The competition’s commissioner desired the conversion of these building from their current state of complete disuse into weekend-rental vacation apartments. The 18th century façade and the buildings proportions are protected by the local Superintendent of Artistic Heritage. Thus the project creates new layouts that correspond to the buildings’ new function, without altering the its existing proportions, materials and characteristic elements. The modern revisiting of the architectonic elements as well as the opportune environmental strategies implemented (natural ventilation, façade shading, and ground source heat pumps) allow for optimal environmental comfort conditions for users while guaranteeing a maximum amount energy conservation.
