There is increasing evidence of financially poor, politically and socially marginalised peoples who have managed to strengthen the security and sustainability of their livelihoods by realising the value of their biodiversity asset in many diverse and pioneering ways. The UNDP Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) and the UNDP Equator Initiative have identified hundreds of such local initiatives.
