"Sprawl" is the increased use of urbanized land by fewer people thanin the past. Traditional cities were compact and efficient, but overthe past 30-50 years, the density of land used per person has declineddrastically. Although the U.S. population grew by 17 percent from1982 to 1997, urbanized land increased by 47 percent during the same 15year period.
