World Architecture Day 2013
United Kingdom Architecture News - Oct 07, 2013 - 00:55 4340 views
Following the phenomenally successful launch in London last year, World Architecture Day returns for a second bite of the apple. And this time it's big. Taking place in New York over 3 days, WAD 13 brings together the most illustrious architects, planners, engineers, developers and designers from all four corners of the globe to exchange ideas, showcase innovative, award-winning work and discuss new business ventures.
Working in partnership with the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY), World Architecture News will be hosting a flexible programme of events centred around the past, present and future of international architecture. Through a unique mix of building tours, presentations, debates and workshops, we'll be exploring previous successes, current challenges and asking perhaps the most important question: where is architecture going in the future?
Set against the backdrop of Archtober, a month-long celebration of New York's architecture and design, our summit kicks off on Sunday 06 October. Throughout the day, we'll be looking back at the city's architecture with tours of Manhattan's most iconic buildings - giving attendees the chance to reflect on how these landmarks have helped shape the dramatic cityscape we have today.
Monday 07 October sees the official celebration of World Architecture Day. Our agenda promises a lively mix of presentations, debate and keynote addresses from the world's leading architects, developers and engineers. The focus of our discussions will be on the proposition Towards eight billion: housing the next generation. As populations swell and space is at an increasing premium, we'll be looking at residential initiatives and alternative typologies that push the boundaries of design; spaces that rethink our relationship with the environment and deliver sustainable, cost-effective solutions to the current global housing crisis. The day ends with an evening reception celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Center for Architecture, one of the world's most vibrant cultural institutions and home to AIANY.
Our summit draws to a close on Tuesday 08 October. With a focus on the future of architecture and engineering, we'll be visiting a selection of studios and practices around Manhattan to discuss the latest developments and innovations. From intelligent facades and smart materials to advances in manufacture and cutting-edge technologies, our workshops are intended to promote visionary ideas that will help revolutionise the way we design, construct and realise buildings.
