New Practices New York, a biennial competition since 2006, serves as the preeminent platform in New York City to recognize and promote new and innovative architecture and design firms. The juried portfolio competition is sponsored by the New Practices Committee of the AIA New York Chapter and honors firms that have utilized unique and innovative strategies, both for the projects they undertake and for the practices they have established.

What to Submit:
This competition brief asks firms to submit a mini digital portfolio in a 10 page, 6 MB maximum PDF format that includes a practice narrative (500 words maximum) that should be directed toward answering the following questions:

• Critical Practice
How does your practice engage critically in the environmental, social, and technological conditions within 
of our contemporary culture? How is your practice informed by issues within a local and global context?

• Methods of Practice
How do you as design professionals work together in new, different, and/or
more supportive ways than traditional practice? How have concepts of
collaboration and integration influenced the structure of your practice and the
type of work it undertakes?

• Engagement of Practice
What are the key issues that you address and advocate for as a practice?
How do you choose to communicate and engage the agenda of
of your practice to a broader audience and public?

Winners Receive:
• Participation in an exhibition/ installation at the Center for Architecture
• A stipend towards the exhibition
• A free one year membership in the AIA New York Chapter and access to the New Practice Committee which has been serving as a successful platform for young practices in New York. 
• A symposium to discuss their practice at the Center for Architecture
• An individual lecture at the Hafele showroom
• Media exposure through the AIA and Media Partner Architects Newspaper

Eligibility:
The New Practices Showcase has the following eligibility requirements:
• New practices are defined as architecture and design firms that have been founded after January 1, 2004. (Registered and non-registered)
• The Competition is open to all designers 
• Selected firms must be located within the 5 boroughs of New York City.
• All work for built projects must credit the architect of record for the project on the individual portfolio page.
• Theoretical and un-built work is welcome and encouraged
(Please include a copy of “Certificate of Firm Incorporation” or a signed certification that practice was founded after
January 1, 2004).

Registration and Submission Process:
After you register, you will receive a badge number, which should be included on the top right hand corner of each page of your pdf portfolio and in the file name and will serve as confirmation of your payment. The digital portfolio should be submitted as a 10 page, 6 MB maximum PDF, that includes a practice narrative (500 words maximum). This PDF should be emailed to[email protected] no later than 12pm Eastern Standard Time on January 6, 2014. Entrants must also include a signed image release form which can be downloaded here.

Credits:
When applicable, the architect or firm of record, associate architects, project
team, consultants, client, and general contractor must be credited.
Failure to do so may lead to disqualification.

This is the fifth iteration of the biennial New Practices competition. AIANY’s New Practices winners have also been exhibited in London (2007) and San Francisco (2009), and São Paulo (2011) and those cities have brought their works to NYC.

EXHIBITION ON VIEW
The New Practices New York 2014 exhibition will be designed by Pentegram and will open at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York City on October 1, 2014.
