Avant-Garde Heritage at Risk: Report from the Front
United Kingdom Architecture News - May 07, 2014 - 09:40 2175 views
WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
At the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place
Radio Tower by Vladimir Shukhov (1920-1922), the first double height unit Narkomfin building by Moisey Ginzburg (1928-1932), and dozens of other important Constructivist landmarks are under the imminent threat of demolition. Others, such as the Melnikov House, or the Communal Housing block by Ivan Nikolaev are being "renovated" without any consideration of their historical status. If something is not done immediately, we might lose the first diagrid tower structure, the pioneering double-height minimal housing unit, and one of the first large scale modernist communal experiments of the 20th century.
This "report from the front" is meant to communicate a sense of urgency and to bring public awareness to the current state of the modernist heritage in Moscow and beyond.
