Balloons, blimps and bubbles aren't just for the sky. In the new book "Inflatable: Art, Architecture & Design," author Jacobo Krauel showcases a range of air-filled objects and structures, from furniture to temporary shelters to mobile performance venues. After noticing a boom in the ephemeral structures, he decided to document striking examples of inflatables since the first hot air balloon in 1709. He also includes a section on ideas for the future, like a moon base for research. Today's structures are relatively low-cost, and new lightweight, water-resistant materials have added to their appeal. "It's a really good solution for all kinds of events and exhibitions," says Mr. Krauel.
