The Resilience by Design methodology addresses the need for bottom up sustainable development approaches that respond to the many interrelated risks facing disadvantaged communities.

The focus area of our upcoming workshop is the area of Tierrabaja in La Boquilla, on the outskirts of Cartagena. The area is characterised by the presence of a unique mangrove ecosystem and is inhabited by Afrocolombian groups who hold territorial rights but are facing significant challenges related to land and to the use and management of territorial resources. At present, the area is under enormous pressure for development – threatening both the neighbouring fragile landscape ecologies, and the permanence of the communities of Afro-origin living across the coastal territory of Cartagena.

The workshop will focus on the development of a Community Action Plan for the area of Tierrabaja. This Action Plan will tackle the community-based development and delivery of a portfolio of strategies addressing the interface between socio-economic development and environment in the area, and identifying specific initiatives that can be implemented in the short term.

Resilience by Design 2014 is an initiative by Architecture Sans Frontières UK in partnership with FEM (Fundación por la Educación Multidimensional) y ASOCOC (Asociación de Consejos Comunitarios del Distrito de Cartagena), with the support of Sheffield School of Architecture, University of Sheffield.
