The work of the Swiss economist and sociologist Lucius Burckhardt and the British architect Cedric Price will be the subject of the Swiss Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, which runs from June 7 to Nov. 23. The show, “A stroll through a fun palace,” is being organized by Hans-Ulrich Obrist, a director of the Serpentine Galleries in London.
Cedric Price
Burckhardt (1925-2003), who developed the concept of “strollology,” or the science of the walk, was a pioneer in the analysis of man-made environments, and helped establish sociology as an important part of architecture studies. Price (1934-2003) influenced British architecture in the 1960s with his belief in technology as a means to control the environment. His (unbuilt) 1960-61 project, “Fun Palace” offered facilities for dancing, drama, music and fireworks.
“At the core of both their work is a practice of drawing. ?At the center of the project will be the archives of drawings of Cedric and Lucius, of which different aspects will be revealed throughout the Biennale,” Mr. Obrist said in a press statement.
The Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, former students of Burckhardt, will organize the display of Burckhardt’swork. They have also designed the Cedric Price section, which is organized in part by Mirko Zardini, the director of the Canadian Center for Architecture.
Several well-known artists, including Philippe Parreno, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Tino Sehgal and Dan Graham will contribute to the exhibition in the form of homages to Burckhardt and Price. The space will, according to press materials, “be programmed according to a time-based dramaturgy, creating a changing mise-en-scène and an exhibition in constant motion.”
