Is sustainability boring?

I am not that smart. I am actually pretty mediocre: I never take cold showers, I don’t do sports. I bite my fingernails. I am just a molecular designer. I start from molecules and then I look at the big picture. But in between it needs industrial design, graphic design – it needs architecture. Commonly, people think that when they protect the environment they are being less bad. Like the German Environmental Protection Agency says: “Please protect the environment. Don’t use your car that often!” That is not much different from saying: “Please protect your children. Don’t beat them up that often!” By destroying a little less, we are not protecting anything. So it is not about being less bad, but about doing the right thing. It is about total beauty. Today the average indoor air quality is already about three times worse than the outside air in an urban area like the centre of Milan. And we worsen the situation even more, as we now try to save energy by sealing our buildings. Well, in a certain way the Nazis win. You see, in Germany you get tax credits if you seal your home – you get actually subsidized for constructing private gas chambers. Nothing of our traditional design products, no shoe, no furniture, have been designed to be used
