Winners announced for a new central business district ideas competition in Thessaloniki

Winners have been announced for a new central business district ideas competition in Thessaloniki, Greece. ALE Studio from Spain has been announced as the winner of the ideas competition for the design of the new Central Business District of Thessaloniki, Greece. 

The competition was launched in March, 2020 and endorsed by the International Union of Architects (UIA). 

The competition was organised by ALUMIL S.A. an international company dealing in aluminium and advanced architectural aluminium systems based in Greece.

The international jury included architect and UIA representative Kasper Guldager Jensen (Denmark), Alumil representative and Innovation Director Nikolaos Salpingidis (Greece), architect Gabriela Carrillo (Mexico), architect Lauren Haiden (South Africa) and economist Dimitrios P. Tsomocos (UK/Greece). Alternate jurors were architect and UIA representative Sara Martin Camara (France) and economist Oren Sussman (Israel).

Due to the global health crisis, the evaluation of the 173 submitted projects was conducted via videoconference on 17-21 November 2020 following recommendations developed by the UIA International Competitions Commission.

The remaining prizes were awarded as follows:

  • 2nd prize:  Angeliki Tzifa and Sophia Nikolaidou (USA)
  • 3rd prize: Mogan Architecture (Netherlands)
  • 4th prize: Alberto Mizrahi, Guillermo Lesch, Osvaldo Alvarez Rojas, Valeria Franck, Federico Menichetti, Leticia Alfaro, Philippa Jane Page (France)
  • 5th prize: Maria Chrysoula Akrivou, Antonis Athanasiou (Netherlands)
  • 6th prize: BURA urbanism (Netherlands)

The honorable mentions (by the country’s alphabetical order) were:

  • ADA - Agency Design & Architecture (Bulgaria)
  • hOP/ar (France)
  • F&M Ingegneria Spa (Italy)
  • Studio C+C / Studio 4215 (United Kingdom)
