Beijing-based architecture practice Atelier TeamMinus has completed a dynamic urban space consisting of a piazza and an art space underneath in the Gujiaying horticulture village of Beijing, China.
Named Piazza & Art Space, a dynamic pizza activates its surrounding with dynamic movements that lead to the subterranean art space below. The pizza and art space covers a total of 1280 square meters in total.
Situated in the center of the Gujiaying horticulture village, the whole building features a piazza made of traditional tiles bending upwards, revealing the subterranean art space below.
A frame at the southern end of the piazza pays tribute to a legendary stage that had existed here by the turn of the 20th century, while windowing the Yongning Pavilion and the Tiantian Hill to the north.
The architects also designed a suspended footbridge winding its way down beneath the raised north-west corner of the piazza. It also leads to the semi-open sunken courtyard, before entering the indoor exhibition space.
The art space, situated underneath of the piazza, presents a vivid and dynamic interior composed of an array of oval-formed columns that feature lighting in the upper part. The columns are decorated with stainless steel on the lower part, each column is tapered towards both ends.
Ramps are designed to help circulation and big holes on the roof help trees to grow from inside. The subterranean art space is entirely harmonized with the piazza and being part of the urban space.
