International meeting to “Switch on” creativity in Europe

As part of the Ravenna’s candidacy to European Capital of Culture 2019, on September 19th and 20th, Ravenna2019 organized in collaboration with the Dutch embassy in Italy, the international workshop Switch On.

The event is free but there are limited seats, sign up here!

The aim is to reflect about policies for culture and creative industries and local development the creative industries and social development and will involve about 150 participants in the splendid setting of Palazzo Rasponi, recently restored to its former splendor and opened on May 9 on Europe Day.

Interventions of internationally renowned experts will provide an important stimulus to discuss, learn, and exchange experiences on cities and the creative industries mixing theory sessions with presentations on national and international best practices to be taken as a model to emulate. In order to get the most out of this meeting was also prepared a document that will guide the audience in the discussion on the issues that are particularly close to the heart of Ravenna (urban development and the dock, development and economic innovation, the image and the ‘attractiveness) and at the same time allow the creative industries to stimulate the growth of the Romagna area.

9:00-10:30: Welcome and presentation of the meeting, welcome to Ouidad Bakkali, Councillor for Culture and Massimo Cameliani, Councillor for Productive Activities – Introductory speech of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Italy Michiel den Hond – Greetings from the  General Director of UNESCO Irina Georgieva Bokova and the President of the Cultural Commission of the European Parliament, Hon. Silvia Costa – Statement by Philippe Kern, Founder and Director of KEA – “Culture as a driver of innovation in cities” (Culture as a driver of innovation urban) – Keynote speech by Caroline Bos, the Dutch architect and urban planner, co-founder of UNStudio (Amsterdam) – “Really Creative – connecting cultures & commerce in the contemporary city” (creative, really – The link between culture and commerce in the contemporary city)

10:45-12:15: First panel discussion on “Art and culture in relation to urban development and port”

This first panel focused on the need to Ravenna to reclaim the former industrial area of the dock, and the ‘project Dock’, one of the main projects of Ravenna2019 for the future development of the city. In that way the ICC can help make the dock a point of interest for citizens and workers, (re) connected with the center of the city? Moderator: Prof. Pippo Ciorra, senior curator MAXXI Architecture-Participants will contribute to the discussion by explaining the different types of urban regeneration processes in the port cities that culture can implement: Jean Rehders, Project Manager of Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft (Germany), will present the process implemented in Hamburg to transform the area of Oberhafen , a former goods station, in a new creative district as part of the new emerging district of Hamburg HafenCity – the largest development project innercity (inner-city) in Europe; Giorgio Pagano, former mayor of La Spezia and expert in strategic planning, will talk about the urban regeneration of the waterfront in Italian cities.

1:30pm-3:00pm: Second panel discussion on “Art and culture in relation to economic development and innovation” In the second panel discussed the need to Ravenna to cope with the economic crisis and the decline of traditional industry looking to the development of cultural and creative industries as a tool for innovation and economic growth for the city. What tools and measures can help to create a stimulating environment for professionals in the world of creativity? Moderator: Binacchi Fabrizio, Director of RAI – Radiotelevisione Italian Emilia-Romagna The speakers will share their experiences and knowledge on measures and instruments that contribute to the economic and innovative potential of cultural and creative industries. Walter Amerika, Director of Industry Marketing Academy Eindhoven Design Academy will explain the role of citizen as an integral part of the ecosystem that sustains the creative industries in order to promote innovation and competitiveness; Raul Oreškin, former director of Tartu Centre for the ICC and currently Secretary for the Arts, Ministry of Culture of Estonia, will speak on the development of Tartu Centre for CCI (Estonia) as a tool to develop creative entrepreneurship and retaining young people in the city ; Jean-Christophe Levassor, Director of the Department for Culture – Lille Métropole, Lille Métropole discuss the approach to creativity and the search for a balance between policies for the arts and creativity as well as of the most recent strategies for the creative industries; and Kirsi Kaunisharju, Counsellor for Cultural Affairs at the Division for Policy artistic Ministry of Education and Culture Finnish explain how the Structural Funds (ESF) have been used to support businesses and the creative forces in Finland.

9:30-11:00: Third Panel, discussion on “Art and Culture in relation to internationalization and the attractiveness of the city” The third panel addresses the need to Ravenna to improve its international appeal. In that way the city can leverage its full potential (in the fields of culture, arts and crafts, creative talents, nature …) to attract and retain talent, companies and investments, as well as domestic and foreign visitors for longer periods? Moderator: Edoardo Colombo, tourism expert digital – a member of the TDLab MiBact Participants will present some positive experiences that demonstrate the role of culture in local strategies as a tool to improve the image of the city at an international level. Michele Trimarchi, Professor of Cultural Economics at the University of Bologna and independent consultant on cultural and creative industries, will talk about the role of art and culture in the internationalization strategies of the city, based on his academic knowledge and long-standing experience in field of culture and local development; Hansjürgen Schmölzer, manager at the agency’s regional marketing BSX (Graz – Austria), former head of Marketing Management, Graz 2003 Graz discuss the strategy for tourism development and how the city has taken advantage of the experience of Graz 2003 internationalize; and Josyane Franc, responsible for the international relations of the Cité du Design and the Ecole Supérieure d’Art et Design de Saint-Étienne, will present the design sector of Saint-Étienne and how it has helped transform the city into a center of attraction for the new economy; and Joseph Salghetti Drioli, PR and Marketing at Italian BLS.Business Location Südtirol – Alto Adige will share his experience on the actions put in place to transform Bolzano in an attractive location for innovative companies and film production projects.
