CICA BOOK AND JOURNAL AWARDS 2014: WINNERS

The International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA) presents the winners of the 2014 Book, Exhibition Catalogue and Journalism Awards, as they were announced at the CICA Symposium held within the UIA World Congress Durban 2014 on August 4th in the Durban International Convention Centre ICC.

The international jury consisted of:
Joseph Rykwert (UK) 
Manuel Cuadra (coordination)(Germany) 
Sengül Gür (Turkey) 
Louise Noelle (Mexico) 
Jennifer Taylor (Australia)


The jury unanimously agreed to give the CICA Bruno Zevi Book Award 2014 to the title:

Rowan Moore: Why We Build (Picador)

 

The following titles were commended:

Francisco González de Canales: Experiments with Life Itself. Radical   

Domestic Architecture between 1937 and 1959 (Actar)

Rahul Mehrotra: Architecture in India since 1990 (Pictor)

Irénée Scalbert & 6a architects: Never Modern (Park Books)

 

The CICA Julius Posener Exhibition Catalogue Award 2014 has been assigned to:

Wilfried Wang ed.: Culture: City (Akademie der Künste/Lars Müller Publishers)

The following titles were commended:

Frédéric Edelman ed.: Made by Chinese (Galerie Enrico Navarra) 

Sandra O'Connell ed.: Irish Architecture - The RIAI Annual Review(RIAI) 

Geoff Maunaugh ed.: Landscape Futures (Actar)

 

The CICA Pierre Vago Journalism Award 2014 has been assigned to the essay:

Juhani Pallasmaa: "In Praise of Vagueness", Space and Psyche(Center)

 

The following essays were commended:

Thomas Daniell: "The Fugitive - Thomas Daniell on Toyo Ito", AA Files 62

Shane O’Toole: "Ronnie Tallon, 4 Squares", Architecture Ireland 271

 

The jury unanimously agreed to give a CICA Special Prize of the Jury to the lateRoberto Segre for his life work and in particular for his last book:

Ministério da Educaçao e Saúde (Romano Guerra Editora)

 

On CICA
The International Committee of Architectural Critics CICA has, since it was established in Mexico City in 1978, been closely associated with the World Congresses of the International Union of Architects.
The inaugural meeting of CICA was held in the Joan Miró Foundation in July 1979 when Prof. Bruno Zevi (Rome) was elected the first CICA President with Jorge Glusberg (Argentina), Julius Posener (Germany), Dennis Sharp (UK) and Pierre Vago (France) as Directors.
The current President is Joseph Rykwert (UK); the CICA Board Members are François Chaslin (France), Manuel Cuadra (Germany), Louise Noelle Gras (Mexico), Süha Özkan (Turkey), Yasmin Shariff (UK) and Jennifer Taylor (Australia).
CICA has held critical sessions in Barcelona, Beijing, Berlin, Brighton, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Gelsenkirchen, Istanbul, Kuwait, London, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Sydney, Tokyo, Torino, Vancouver, Vienna, and Warsaw.
