Parametric Design has offered much-lauded advantages in the way of dramatically minimizing the time required for the execution of tedious tasks, and the ability to both quickly generate and test variants of hyper-complex geometries. However, outside of a few limited attempts to begin deploying parametric design towards environmental performance and optimization studies, parametricism in architecture has most often stayed at the level of dazzling geometry or precisely optimized interiors.
In this presentation we aim to understand the political and moral aporias of parametric design, and to collectively ponder and pursue the possibilities for an alternative to (or a subversive form of) parametricism. What would its guiding principles be?
Towards what ends should it serve?
What would such a project demand in the way of rapprochement between architectural practice and theory?
What is at stake?
