The removal of window-washers, hawkers & beggars from Joburg's traffic intersections
Operation ke Molao is an initiative by the City of Johannesburg to rid its traffic intersections of window-washers, beggars and hawkers. The rationale behind this is that these individuals contribute to unsafe traffic intersections, resulting in Smash & Grabs and other crimes. Yet, it could be argued that the appraoch by the City generalises the poor as criminals, denying many of a legitimate economic livelihood.
Join Urban Joburg as it hosts a City Afrika discussion on Operation ke Molao. This is an informal, facilitated gathering of people from a wide range of backgrounds with a passion for Johannesburg. Past events have attracted lively, substantive and engaging debate.
