RMJM and Huafa Announce the Grand Opening of the Zhuhai Shizimen Business Cluster Exhibition and Convention Centre

Another important milestone was achieved by RMJM on the 30th October 2014 with the grand opening of the Shizimen Business Cluster Exhibition and Convention Centre in Zhuhai, China.

Brenda Ye and Tean Chee Ko, Project Director and Design Director of RMJM Red, attended the opening ceremony with their clients, Huafa Industrial Co Ltd., with whom RMJM prides itself on having an excellent and long standing customer relationship.

A relationship that stretches back to 2009 when RMJM won the international bid for the design of the Zhuhai Shizimen Business Cluster Exhibition and Convention Centre working in collaboration with Huafa.

“Looking back at the efforts of our design team over the course of the last five years, we feel proud of our achievements with Huafa. As designers and architects, we see how working from the design through to the realisation with the client has enabled us to achieve a high quality outcome for both parties”, said Brenda Ye

Tean Chee Ko added: “The opening of the Zhuhai Shizimen Business Cluster Exhibition and Convention Centre today is the crystallisation of our design efforts and of the client’s wisdom.”

At one point, the development was the largest construction site in China. The Zhuhai Shizimen Cluster is today not only a distinguished landmark that creates a space for locals to live and promote their culture but also a platform that ties the surrounding areas of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao together. This also promotes the Zhuhai region in an international arena as the key city for the Convention and Exhibition industry.

The Zhuhai Shizimen Business Cluster Exhibition and Convention Centre

The new Zhuhai Convention and Exhibition Complex is a key element of the development of the wider Shizimen Business District in Zhuhai.

Located in the northern part of the district, the business and exhibition cluster includes an international convention centre, exhibition centre, a Class A office building, two 5-star hotels, business apartments and supporting facilities split into two sites.

While the site area is of 269,000 square metres, the total floor area is of 1,000,000 square metres, of which 550,600 square metres of above ground floor space.

Considering the significantly large-scale of the project, the RMJM Red design team’s primary focus was on how to encapsulate the functionalities of the cluster within the characteristics that make the city so unique: its relationship to its landscape, water front and romantic tradition.

The design concept for the convention centre is driven by the “city of romance” moniker, and the connection of the site to the water. As such it has been designed as a sensuous ribbon that wraps around both open and enclosed spaces. This included key elements of the development such as meeting areas and landscape features.

RMJM Red has worked consistently with the client and construction company discussing every detail, however small to ensure the best outcome within the real world parameters.

The Zhuhai Shizimen Business Cluster Exhibition and Convention Centre will drive the development in the region and will open the city doors to the international arena.
