Studio Gang’s Natural History Museum Expansion approved by Landmarks Commission

Studio Gang's proposal the American Museum of Natural History's Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday. Studio Gang's new building embodies the Museum's integrated mission of science, education, and exhibition.
The project is totally carved-out by concrete mass that creates a continuous forms and spatial experiences. At a time of urgent need for better public understanding of science and for greater access to science education, the Gilder Center offers the general public and school groups new ways to learn about science and share in the excitement of discovery.
The Commission's chairwoman, Meenakshi Srinivasan, called the proposed Gilder Center a "stunning piece of architecture" and an "absolutely wonderful addition."
"It’s quiet, but it’s elusive, but it’s attractive and it draws you in," Srinivasan said of the plan.
Her colleagues agreed, heaping praise on project designer Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang.
