’Architects always do more’ says Nathalie de Vries, founder of MVRDV

Last february 28 an interview with Nathalie de Vries, founding director of MVRDV, was published on the Dutch Architectenweb. In the interview, consisting of two parts, Nathalie talks about the transition of the architecture industry and her work as chairman of the BNA.

Due to the crisis, the field of architecture is experiencing some changes all firms need to adapt to. Offices are increasingly cooperating and employees need constant retraining to remain up to date. Nathalie talks about the opportunities she sees in these changing conditions.

In the second part of the interview, Nathalie's chairmanschip of the BNA and her vision, goals and the changes she wants to make in this position are discussed.

In recent years the conditions were under which architects were expected to do their work - not only in the procurement - under severe pressure. There was to be delivered more work in less time, for less money. How do you expect that it develops? Will improve this? Whether this is simply the new reality? 

"Over the years there has certainly created a new reality, whether you like it or not.We live in a time when jobs are becoming more cut up, which is always adapted to what architects should make. We have become slowly accustomed to. " 

'Offices have adapted That changed conditions. There is no longer any kind of architect. You see that agencies have found all kinds of new revenue. What can an architect, has always done in the past hundred years, is now increasingly incorporated into various types of agencies that serve different markets. Full service to focus on design or just the technical details. 

"You can talk about it in terms of loss: not all architects do a 100% job. But there are also quite a lot of architects that cover very smart certain aspects of the market and position itself strongly with that. In young desks I see very strong, they know very well what they want to focus on. They are doing something special, present themselves with it, and develop it further.
