’’Future Food District’’ explores our consumption habits presented at Expo Milan 2015

image © Carlo Ratti Associati/ The Future Food District presents new technologies that can be applied at each step of the food chain.The area is divided into three spaces and the journey starts in the main square which is covered by a shallow layer of water,connecting the different pavilions and thus creating a micro universe.Visitors can see new food and energy production systems,including seaweed panels and plants that are cultivated in water.

Carlo Ratti Associati in the he World Fair - Expo Milano 2015, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”- is finally here! Among CRA's projects is the Future Food District:a 70,000 sq. ft. thematic pavilion, lying at the heart of the exhibition grounds, that explores how digital technology can transform the way we interact with the food chain.Developed together with supermarket chain COOP, the pavilion explores how data could change our relation with food, informing us about its origins and characteristics and promoting more informed consumption habits. Outside the pavilion, the world's largest plotter transforms the facade into an ever changing canvas fed by content provided by visitors.
image © Carlo Ratti Associati/This is the access to the supermarket that is located on two levels.On the ground floor the visitor passes through a long corridor to a computerized warehouse where robotic systems order and prepare food that will then be displayed on the upper floor.The mechanisms of the food chain are revealed,helping us understand where the food comes from.
