The 12th São Paulo International Architecture Biennale will kick off on September 10, 2019 and continue until December 2019 in São Paulo, Brazil. Curated by Vanessa Grossman, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes and Ciro Miguel, the São Paulo Architecture Biennale seeks to reveal the architecture of everyday life in its different scales under the theme of "Everyday".
Architects and planners have long aspired to design entire habitats, civilizations, and even the planet. But in the current climate of political, economic and environmental uncertainty, these professionals have come to recognize the limits of their disciplines. In reaction, they brought the focus of architecture into the realm of everyday life, questioning the central purpose of design in an over-designed world — including banal objects, daily routines, maintenance protocols, or even the use of basic features. This line of inquiry, the theme of the XII Biennial, reestablishes the most trivial dimension of reality, the "everyday", as a mediator of the production of architecture and the city in search of a new ethics and aesthetics of simplicity.
The theme Everyday is structured around three thematic axes: Daily Reports , Daily Materials and Daily Maintenance. Each axis will bring research, speculative works, installations and projects of architecture, design, urbanism and landscaping. Other types of material intervention will also be presented that problematize the contemporary mediations of the daily plane at different scales: from the body to the objects, from the interior spaces to the planetary limits.
