Municipality Square (Sa'at Square) is located in front of the Tabriz Municipality Palace, known as the "Clock Building." In the local dialect, this place is commonly called “Saat Qabaqi” (in front of the clock). The square is situated at the intersection of Artesh and Imam Khomeini Streets. Its name and fame come from the clock installed on the Municipality Palace of Tabriz. Interestingly, this palace, when viewed from above, is shaped like an eagle.
The Municipality Clock Tower of Tabriz was built in 1935 (1314 Hijri Shamsi) in the Nobar area under the order of Haj Arfa al-Molk and supervised by German engineers. The architectural style of the building resembles those commonly found in Germany.
Until 1945 (1324 Hijri Shamsi), this location was merely a crossroad. During the rule of Ja'far Pishevari, the square was constructed, and a bust of Baqer Khan, the National Commander, was installed there. After Pishevari's downfall, the statue was replaced by one of Mohammad Reza Shah.
Today, this square is considered one of the main urban spaces in Tabriz. Sa’at Square is among the oldest and most famous landmarks of Tabriz and is seen as a symbol of the city. It is also recognized as one of the top tourist attractions in East Azerbaijan Province. Located in the heart of Tabriz, this historical square has been officially registered as a national heritage site of Iran.
The square owes its reputation to the unique and valuable clock situated on the tower of the Tabriz Municipality Building. The tower's clock is a mechanical one and is considered unique, with only one similar example in the world—located on the famous Big Ben Tower in London. The square has witnessed a long and eventful history throughout the years.
