Rising with the Waves: A New Landmark at Kaohsiung Harbour
Led by Aedas Global Design Principal Dr. Andy Wen and Executive Director Zi Huan Lin, in joint venture with CHY Architecture Urban Landscape, the Kaohsiung Multifunctional Economic & Trade Zone Temao (Three) North Plot project creates a new landmark at the intersection of Kaohsiung Harbour and the city centre. The design draws inspiration from the concept of ‘setting sail’, integrating six independent office towers into a cohesive architectural cluster that reflects the open spirit and dynamic beauty of the port city.
Located just 300 meters from the waterfront, the design captures the visual corridor extending from the docks to the waterfront park and the city library, using this as a key element in the building’s layout. The six towers are arranged in two symmetrical groups on each side of a central axis, creating an open ‘visual gateway’ to the city. The towers are connected by a retail podium that encloses a public central plaza facing the port. A sky bridge connects the towers and guides people towards the park and the city centre, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces.
The building’s shape is inspired by Kaohsiung’s port culture, using a modern design language to translate the ideas of ‘sails’ and ‘waves’ into architectural forms. The towers’ architectural forms resemble sails, creating a dynamic skyline. The façades feature curves similar to sailboats, using Low-E glass and aluminium panels combined with vertical and horizontal lines to create a rich rhythmic effect. The sky bridge flows between the buildings like waves, linking previously disconnected urban areas and establishing a strong visual identity.
The buildings incorporate landscaped balconies on all sides, where curved forms soften the rigid façade and extend the greenery vertically. This multi-dimensional greening system not only blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces but also improves the microclimate, reduces the heat island effect, and creates a sustainable complex that integrates with the environment.
The interior space continues the overall design philosophy, offering flexible office units that can adapt to the needs of different businesses, from startups to established companies. Each floor includes a landscaped balcony, offering employees a refreshing connection to nature. This design creates a calming area where people can enjoy views of the harbour and sunlight, redefining the modern office experience.
‘We envision the buildings to be more than just office spaces, but a place that resonates with the city’s spirit and connects with people. It provides a harmonious environment for people to work, relax, and connect, while embodying the essence of Kaohsiung – born by the sea, rising with the wind, and moving forward with the waves.’ Andy and Zi Huan share.
