Design Concept for the Central Square and Landmark of Arg-e Jadid, Bam

The central square of Arg-e Jadid Bam has been envisioned as a symbolic and interactive space, embodying both cultural memory and contemporary aspirations. The design concept draws from the notions of ascension and progress, hierarchy, authority, the Tree of Life, water and purity, sanctity, and unity, weaving them together into a timeless architectural expression.

The main landmark is composed of seven ascending elements, representing the seven historical eras of Kerman, each rising higher to narrate the story of continuity and evolution. The form celebrates the spiritual journey of growth, while also expressing resilience and advancement. Surrounding the landmark, the six primary entrances recall the six historical gates of Kerman, reinterpreted as thresholds of openness, connectivity, and cultural exchange.

Water elements are introduced as reflective surfaces and flowing channels, symbolizing purity, renewal, and the deep ecological heritage of the region. Landscaping integrates the metaphor of the Tree of Life, providing shade, vitality, and a natural gathering point that reinforces both ecological and social sustainability.

The square is designed not merely as a static monument but as a dynamic public realm, encouraging interaction, gathering, and shared experiences. By merging heritage with forward-looking design, the space aspires to foster a sense of collective identity and belonging. It becomes a stage for cultural events, civic life, and intergenerational dialogue — a sustainable heart of the community that honors the past while shaping the future.
