In Iceland, half of the year is covered under ice and snow, while the hot spring brings warmth to this area. Water, as the origin of life, became the greatest gift for Iceland from the lord. We imitated the natural form by simulating the solidified fountain and covered functional spaces with local material. The fountain-shaped tower in the middle rushed out of the ground like new branches, becoming an irreplaceable landmark building.
The site is at Grjótagjá cave, the northern part of Iceland. Unlike other natural landscapes, the cave is like a hidden Utopia Wonderland right under the land. There are geothermal hot springs and a prestigious wonder of nature underground. Through miles of the tectonic divide, mankinds got the chance to connect with natural treasures and to know about the beauty of nature.
Combining the local climate, stone and vegetation are also our main design topics. Our buildings can not only bring vitality, hope and satisfaction to the local area, and satisfy tourists' curiosity about the cracked canyon, but also achieve the so-called "fusion" and low damage to the local landscape. Our Tower would as like a new bud in the spring. The saplings lead the gentle and mysterious hot springs out of the ground. Let tired travellers use the safest and most convenient way to approach the treasures of Grjótagjá.
Many centuries ago in Iceland, people led thermal steam into houses to keep interior spaces warm during cold days. We imitated the local tradition by leading the heat and water in the room from thermal hot springs to reduce the energy cost of the thermostat.
We tried to express the most precious natural resources and historical culture of Iceland. The extraordinary scenery is formed by the strong power of nature just like a natural fountain or a budding seed breaks through the ground, which leads us to the concept of "White Spring".
