Venice is the place of the International Architecture and Art Biennale. The Biennale Area is situated in the eastern end of the City of Venice. Does the site with its pavillons offer the proper place for a Biennale? What happens the rest of the year beside the Biennale? In which relation do the inhabitants of Venice stand?
Venice also belongs to the Shrinking Cities. A City, which is only living on its past and the tourism aligned. Besides both Biennales, Giardini is an empty place, a wasted land at the edge of the city.
My evaluation method was a strong analysis, where I simulated selected scenarios in a diagrammatical way. For a sustainable change of the current situation, the area of Giardini has to be related to the city. The first configuration is the relocation of the Vaporetto-Port to the eastern end of the area, so that the site is connected to the tourist-routes. That ensures a persistent frequency of visitors. The edge of the site is the most exposed place of Giardini and therefore the right location for an extension building, as well as programmatically. The program is a Vaporetto-terminal, gift shop, welcome hall, auditorium, exhibition spaces and administration offices.
The project is conceived to be an appropriate answer to the isolated national pavillon state. It conceives to be a kind of community-model for all participants of the Biennale.
