The project creates an efficient and user friendly working environment to facilitate as an “Urban Kitchen and Admin Office for FAB” within the industrial zone – Rathmalana. The whole objective of the design is to present a simple and sleek building to match with the existing abandoned factory complex, to be developed at the Second Phase. While operation been function at the ground level the administration and the related office functions were placed at the upper level access via a landscape garden, purposefully obstructing the visibility of the operation on ground level. A pathway was introduced to create a link between the proposed building and the existing building, and the kitchens were placed towards the existing building to ease the loading and unloading process within the operation. Each and every space was designed while encouraging the natural light and ventilation, and as the longer façade was placed towards the east-west axis it will further minimize the effect of heating to the internal spaces. An internal courtyard was placed in the middle which separates the building into two blocks, further encouraging the optimum use of natural light and ventilation. From each and every aspect tried out the best to present a passive building design with low energy usage in order to minimize the maintenance and operational cost thus generating a pleasant and comfortable environment overlooking the landscape.
