Intention: To design a museum that frames the absence of the past into the present.

Aim of the Project: The aim is to design a museum that emotionally preserves untold stories of loss in Kashmir through the integration of elemental space-making.

Abstract: The "Museum of Absence in Kashmir: Exploring Unseen Linkages" confronts the profound impact of loss and displacement woven into the tapestry of Kashmir's history. This project meticulously examines the voids left by the unpredictable course of the state, emphasizing the untold stories of human suffering and upheaval. Through a poignant exploration of architectural design, the project aims to create an impactful space that preserves the collective memory of a community marked by turmoil. As Victor Hugo eloquently stated, "Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise." This project endeavors to be a beacon of remembrance, offering a path toward understanding, healing, and resilience in the face of historical darkness.

Absence as a metaphor:

In the heart of Kashmir, the “Museum of Absence” employs absence not merely as an empty space but as a profound metaphor, symbolizing the immeasurable human losses and enduring sufferings etched into the region’s recent history. Absence, wielded as a metaphor within this architectural venture, transcends mere physical vacancy; it becomes the poignant silhouette of lives lost, dreams shattered, and untold stories left unheard.

Through symbolic architecture and evocative exhibits, the Museum of Absence becomes a conduit for remembrance, fostering empathy, and illuminating the resilience that endures amidst the shadows of human sufferings.

Objectives:

To create an architectural fusion that evokes emotional connection, guiding visitors towards the unknown side of Kashmir’s History. To design a space that evokes a profound sense of remembrance, acknowledging the cultural heritage and losses experienced in Kashmir. To design a space that seamlessly frames past events into the present, thereby creating a meaningful and interconnected narrative.

Site Location: Hari Parbat Hill, situated in Srinagar, offers both a peaceful atmosphere and historical significance, with beautiful views.

Site Justification:

The site creates a heritage trail, and is ideal for the Museum of Absence, surrounded by Kashmir’s landmarks like Jamia Masjid, Hari Parbat Fort, Moqdum Sahib Shrine, and Dal Lake. Nestled at the foothills of Hari Parbat, it seamlessly integrates with the region’s history, fostering a deep sense of belonging and pride within the local community.

Quote: "In the silence of absence, the museum speaks volumes of untold stories through timeless architecture."
