Description
A mixed-use project with an intervention which responds to the concerns of the vanishing migratory birds around the site. A biomimicry design process was adopted which led to pre-decided service-core locations growing into a series of adaptive plugs which are pulled out to sculpt alleys to allow the birds an undisrupted circuit and to sensitise the urban context towards the deterioration of nature. The design thus results into a growing and unpredictable hybrid of the natural and the built environment
Design process
Adaptive Architecture by definition is concerned with buildings that are specifically designed to adapt to their environment, to their inhabitants, to objects within them, whether induced automatically or through human intervention.
This project explores the intersection of Architectural Design Value as V_01 aesthetics and a system as S_07 services from a VS_Matrix, which is a simple tabulation construct that organizes the Architectural Design Values2 and the Architectural Systems in a simple row & column arrangement.
Decoding the system was the initial phase in which services are defined as the system installed to make the prototype, user, set of system comfortable, functional, efficient and safe. It can be for a building i.e. column, foundation, etc. or for a user i.e. HVAC, staircase, lift, etc.
Later, understanding intangibles parameters - cultural, social and intellectual histories, theories and economics that impact the design decision and tangible parameters - physical location and the environmental conditions that influence design articulations which further helped in positioning of entries, exits and services cores where different functional pods get plugged according to the user need with a concept of bird pavilions which are between the plugs, So as to allow the birds an undisrupted circuit which existed before the building. These pods were plugged by the concept of biomimicry ( Inspired from Missouri Plants with Thorns and banyan fruit)
Characteristics of the design
Adaptive, Flexible, Unpredictable, Program indeterminate and uncertainty
