"Unearthing Gold at Mapusa Market, Goa " aims at transforming a monotonous market into a fusion of market with buzzing multi-functional entertainment space, exhibition space for traditional Goan goods, cafes for leisure. The fusion of modern with traditional Goan architecture welcomes the users. The design proposal aims at converting a day market to a fully functional 24/7-night market and thus promoting the value of the historical market as a major tourist attraction. The Market is at the heart of bustling city life. The market is vital to many communities as people can access fresh and healthy food, connect with their community and support the local economy. People come together to support many local businesses in one location, thus promoting community economic development by keeping money in the local neighborhood. The market helps in connecting regional growers and food artisans to their customer base, as most people live in urban areas whereas agriculture takes places in rural areas. This allows consumers to learn more about where their food comes from and how it is grown. The market plays a key role in improving people’s access to fresh fruits and vegetables. It also provides opportunities for local businesses to test out their products and get direct feedback from customers before expanding to permanent retail. Creating programming around the needs of their communities like bringing in musicians and cultural activities make the market end up being little social hubs for the community.

The project uses modern passive design strategies to comfort the user. Use of recreational spaces to de- congest the market with an effective design process to eliminate the existing collision of vehicles with pedestrian walkways. The existing market lacks light and ventilation, circulation space and thus the proposed market has sufficient light and ventilation through the light penetrating glass , tensile roofing and adequate circulation spaces through the fluid and organic form that attracts the user from the entrance. All the functions are visually connected to each other and aims at converting a maze like confusing market into a multi functional leisure space.
