An existing house from the seventies with an undefined style is currently being used as an office in the historic Coyoacan neighborhood of Mexico City. The client asked for a renovation of the house’s program and the façade, as well as to have a painting studio and apartment on the roof. The unusual disposition of the property and its relation to the neighbors demanded a solution where the new addition respected the district height and frontage regulations as well as maintaining a discrete appearance from its surroundings.
We simply treated the existing structure as a modern rational one by using the existing structural elements and openings but just making them cleaner. We then added the apartment, which is made up of two boxes - one a bedroom, the other a studio - connected by a kitchen and dining room.
