Description

The aim of the project was to convert devastated and derelict ruins within the walls of the medieval city of Korcula into a restaurant and the common facilities related to the accomodation across the street. The new interpolation above ruins was supposed to nest in harmoniously in order to underline beauty of the existing complex.
There were no relevant details for an authentic reconstruction of the front ruins so therefor the reconstruction was not an option. Existing walls were constructively consolidated and above them smooth rendered walls subtly but clearly and honestly differentiate the old from the new. With its type and material the interpolation corresponds with city’s urban tissue but remains contemporary due to its accentuated monolith structure.

Technical data

New facilities, restaurant and relaxation area demanded single spaced areas which has created numerous problems during the construction design phase. Existing stone monocellular buildings had dimensions which were dealt with traditional construction solutions, stone walls and horizontal wood construction. Stone-plated steel construction proved as the optimal solution for connecting smaller units since traditional approach was not possible. The old wall basis was consolidated and presented with the use of appropriate building and conservation techniques.
